Job description

Biobased polymers, or bioplastics, are increasingly popular alternatives to conventional oil-based polymers. The biopolymer market is expected to increase to €5.6 billion by 2025. Activated sludge could create new, sustainable, ethical bio-based polymers to meet the global biopolymer demand, thus integrating wastewater treatment into the circular economy. However, the microbes from wastewater are largely uncultured and little is known about their physiology, including biopolymer production and its composition. This greatly limits their potential for developing new biobased polymers.

The project combines the efforts from TU Delft and leading Nordic scientists from Aalborg University and Aarhus University to develop new strategies for converting waste activated sludge into high-value, sustainable biopolymers.

This Postdoc project is part of a larger consortium with several PhDs and Postdocs in the Netherlands and Denmark, from various backgrounds such as molecular biology, microbiology, metagenomics, microbial proteomics, bioinformatics and glycobiology.

The open Postdoc position aims to find a scientist who develops and applies novel microbial proteomics approaches to study the structure of the microbiome in a wastewater treatment plants at high resolution, and ultimately discover new biosynthetic routes for producing new carbohydrate-based biopolymers.

Requirements

We are seeking an exceptional Postdoc with a strong affinity for proteomcis, high-resolution mass spectrometry and bioinformatics. Experiences in the fields of biological mass spectrometry, microbial proteomics, metaproteomics and/or bioinformatics are essential. We are looking for a candidate with a high level of intellectual and practical creativity and a strong interest in applied research. You should have a hands-on mentality, be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment, and have the ability to communicate easily with colleagues from different disciplines.

To apply for this position, you must:

  • posses a PhD degree, or be close to completing one, in the field of biological mass spectrometry, microbial proteomics or a closely related area;
  • have experience in data processing using Python, Matlab or R;
  • have excellent written and spoken English skills;
  • be comfortable working in an international, multidisciplinary and collaborative environment.

Conditions of employment

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service. This service provides information for new international employees to help you prepare the relocation and to settle in the Netherlands. The Coming to Delft Service offers a Dual Career Programme for partners and they organise events to expand your (social) network.
